The Rape of Lucretia
Feb 26, 27 2007
March 1, 2 at Hanoi Opera House

A co-production between the Bangkok Opera and the Netherlands Opera Studio, this is the Southeast Asian premiere of Britten’s chamber opera about corruption and redemption in ancient Rome. Britten’s opera is an allegory from a Christian perspective, but Hans Nieuwenhuis propels that symbolism further into modern times by the use of imagery from Rome’s second empire, that of fascist Italy in the twentieth century.

The stunning cast includes Brenden Gunnel and Ellen van Beek, with soloists from the Siam Philharmonic, conducted by Somtow Sucharitkul.

The Chalerm Krung Royal Theater was designed in 1933 by a former student of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The design is Thai Deco, and will be a fantastic place to host our next opera.
Address: 66 Charoen Krung (New Rd.), Wang Burapha, Phirom, Bangkok, Thailand

Dido and Aeneas
April 24, 25, 26 2007

Conducted by Trisdee na Patalung with the Bangkok Baroque Ensemble, this revival of Bangkok Opera’s 2002 production recreates the atmosphere of a private royal performance in the 17th Century, drawing the audience into the action.

Die Walküre
July 24, 26 2007

The uniquely Asian-themed Bangkok Ring Cycle continues with a spectacular Walküre starring Janny Zomer, Charles Hens, Jessica Chen and Barbara Smith Jones.

Book early! Seats are already moving for this production and we expect several international contingents.

Madama Butterfly
Aug 29, 31 2007

Nancy Yuen finally performs her most celebrated role in Thailand.
Breaking away from traditional Butterflies, Henry Akina directs a stark “black box” style production using traditional kabuki style production ideas in order to show a completely different perspective on this celebrated tearjerker.
Designed by Dean Shibuya.

* Unless stated, all productions are in the original language with English and Thai surtitles so that the audience will always be able to follow the action whether it’s German, Italian, or even English!
